13.
Unlike the San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles (among others), the San Diego Chargers decided to go the conservative route after finishing out of the postseason for a second straight year with a 4-12 record. Instead f firing everyone, the Chargers simply ade some changes to the coaching staff and retained head coach Mike McCoy, effectively giving him a one-year extension to turn the program around. In fairness to McCoy, the roster is pretty crappy. Philip Rivers is a terrific quarterback but he was surrounded by aging stars such as Antonio Gates and Malcom Floyd. With Floyd reitring and Gates becoming a free agent, general manager Tom Telesco has a chance to bring in some new blood and give Rivers a chance from the pocket. The offensive line is also a sieve, something that did not help rookie running back Melvin Gordon, who averaged less than 4.0 yards per carry and scored zero touchdowns. San Diego needs to make it work with Gordon, who the team traded up for to take in the first round of last year’s NFL Draft. Of course, there is the looming issue of whether this team will be in San Diego or Los Angeles next year, hopefully a question that soon has an answer.
. (4-12).
