Blair Walsh and the 10 worst kicker moments in NFL playoff history
By David Rouben
6. Lin Elliott – Colts vs. Chiefs, 1996
Even though Lin Elliott won a Super Bowl with the Dallas Cowboys in his rookie season, and led all rookies in scoring that year, he will be remembered most for missing three field goals against the Colts in a game that ended 10-7 for Indianapolis.
He was no bum for the Chiefs, either. In fact, his field goal accuracy was 81.7% during his two seasons in Kansas City which made him the second-most accurate kicker in Chiefs history. The Chiefs, at 13-3, were expected to beat a heavy underdog in the Colts at 9-7. But Elliott missed two field goals in the first half from 47 and 35 yards out, ensuring the game stayed tied at 7.
Whatever, it’s only the first half. There’s plenty of time to get that back. The Colts only managed to score a field goal in the third quarter, so Elliott had a chance to redeem himself with a 42-yard attempt to tie the game. It would be his third miss of the game, and his fifth in his last nine attempts. It was inexcusable on Elliott’s part, and only added to Kansas City’s playoff misery. After Elliott’s effort cost his team the game, the Chiefs decided to cut him.
