What does Justin Upton’s new six-year deal with the Detroit Tigers mean for free agent slugger Yoenis Cespedes?

MLB Free Agency is pretty much over and there aren’t may big names left, but there is still one crucial player remaining. With slugger Justin Upton coming off the board and signing with the Detroit Tigers on Monday, it leaves Yoenis Cespedes as the big free agent target remaining.

It’s unusual that Cespedes hasn’t signed with anyone yet considering the fact that he went on a tear with the New York Mets as they made a World Series run, yet that is where things are at now.

There had been recently rumblings about Cespedes and the Baltimore Orioles, but those rumblings haven’t led to a deal for Cespedes and he remains a free agent. With spring training not far away and most teams pretty much content with their rosters entering the spring, some may be asking now where does that leave Cespedes?

He has a couple of options that he should genuinely look at. He can either reduce his demands in years and take a deal from anyone that offers him close to what he is looking for, or he can return to New York Mets on a one-year deal and try free agency again next season.

Every year there is one free agent that doesn’t get the deal that they are looking for and lasts for a while in free agency. Cespedes is that guy this year and is without a home currently. If he waits any longer for a deal from a team, then he risks having to take a far less than desirable offer down the road. It seems as the days dwindle before the next season, his best option would be to re-sign with the Mets for one season and try free agency again next year.

It’s risky in the event that he has a bad season in New York during 2016, but he has shown that he can hit the ball quite well at Citi Field. So his chances of success during one more year with the Mets are actually pretty good, ultimately landing him his payday during next free agency period.
