NFL mock draft: Conference championship edition
By Randy Gurzi
Given that the New York Jets selected defensive tackle Leonard Williams just 12 months prior, it seems going back to the same line would be an odd choice. However, with Muhammad Wilkerson set to hit the open market, there is a good chance someone will pay more than the Jets can afford, freeing up a spot for Ohio State’s Adolphus Washington.
At 6-foot-4 and 290 pounds he fits the mold of a true Jets defensive lineman and the team is able to continue their tradition of having tough interior guys who are stout against the run, but can still pressure the quarterback as well.
Washington had a slow start to his career, but came on strong the past two seasons. For his four-year stint in Columbus he had 142 total tackles and 13.5 sacks.
There may be some concerns as the lineman was suspended for the team’s most recent bowl game, following charges for solicitation. The defender issued a statement following the sanction from the school:
"“I want to sincerely apologize to my family, to coach Meyer and the coaching staff, to my teammates and my friends for my lack of judgement last night and for my actions that I truly regret,” Washington said in a statement. “I have wanted to be a high-character teammate, a contributor to the success of this program and, most importantly, someone my family can be proud of. I am extremely disappointed in myself, and I can honestly say I will learn from my mistake and I will accept the consequences that deservedly will come my way. And I hope that people will know that I am truly sorry and that I sincerely do apologize.”"
Taking a player with any red flags is a risk, but Washington’s skill level makes him a risk worth taking, especially if the team believes this was an isolated incident rather than something that will be a continued issue.
