Matt Ladley won his first ever X Games gold medal on Saturday, and celebrated by picking the Broncos to win the Super Bowl.

It was a weird finale to the X Games Aspen Snowboard SuperPipe event on Saturday night. With a snowstorm rolling in, the competition — which usually consists of three runs — was cut to just one heat for each snowboarder. This meant that whatever the competitors did on the first run was going to count as their final score. It’s hard to say that everyone knew this was the case when they went down the SuperPipe, but regardless of who knew what, Matt Ladley walked away with the goal medal.

Not only was this his first gold medal at X Games, but it was his first medal — ever.

It’s not simply that he won his first ever X Games medal on Saturday, it’s that he did so while rocking a Peyton Manning Denver Broncos jersey.

To confirm that his Manning jersey wasn’t some fluky thing to be topical for the sake of being topical — and possibly ironic — Ladley gave his favorite team a shoutout in his post-competition interview on ESPN.

It was one of the weirdest sports crossovers, as the X Games and the Super Bowl aren’t typically mentioned in the same sentence, but it was a perfect way to end the night in Aspen. For the first time ever, all three of the top finishers in the SuperPipe were first-time medalists.
