The 2016 NHL All-Star Skills Competition is the official beginning of All-Star weekend for hockey. It features the All-Stars breaking up by conference and competing against each other in a multitude of events. The two conferences will compete for bragging rights but they will largely be trying to give the fans a good show because that’s what the NHL All-Star weekend is all about.

The events are as follows:

  • Bridgestone Fastest Skater
  • Honda Breakaway Challenge
  • DraftKings Accuracy Shooting
  • Gatorade Skills Challenge Relay
  • AMP Energy Hardest Shot
  • Discover NHL Shootout

The Fastest Skater, Accuracy Shooting, and Hardest Shot competitions are self-explanatory. The Fastest Skater competition features multiple heats. The winner is the skater who gets the fastest time. Accuracy Shooting involves hitting four targets as quickly as possible. The winner is the player who does it the quickest. The Hardest Shot features four heats. The winner of each heat gets a point and the player with the hardest shot gets an extra point.

The other events are a bit interesting. The Breakaway Challenge is the league’s equivalent to the Slam Dunk contest. Players get two chances to do the craziest thing that they can do to score a goal on a breakaway. Points are awarded for flair, style, and creativity and the fans get to choose the winner, who gets one point.

The Skills Challenge Relay four relays with five challenges each. One Timers, Passing, Puck Control, Stick-Handling, and Goalie Goals. During the Goalie Goals part of the relay, goalies will try to score a goal on an empty net from the other end of the ice.

The Discover NHL Shootout is a competition where the two teams get in an epic shootout during which every skater participates. Teams switch goalies after every round. Each round consists of six skaters for both teams. Each team gets one point per goal scored, but they get two points if a goal is scored with the Discovery puck.

The conference with the most points at the end of the competition wins.
