Marcus Smart’s flop caused Carmelo Anthony to miss a wide-open shot and hit the side of the backboard.
In a sequence of embarrassing plays, Marcus Smart flopped and Carmelo Anthony missed a wide-open shot into the side of the backboard as the Boston Celtics battled the New York Knicks.
Anthony made a move as he drove to the basket. Smart fell down as the referees just ignored his exaggerated flop like it never happened as Anthony spun around firing the ball into the side of the backboard. In short it was an ugly sequence of basketball. It’s surprising that Smart wasn’t called for flopping, but the league as a whole has a flopping problem that goes unnoticed often.
If Smart didn’t flop hardcore, Anthony’s air ball would have been very ugly. However, it appears Anthony was expecting a blocking foul or other whistle and he just fired the ball up into the air afterwards. Instead, the Celtics rebounded the ball as both Smart and Anthony looked foolish making millions of dollars to play basketball.
Next time Anthony should keep driving to the lane, which was wide open in this case, and get two easy points instead of anticipating there’s a whistle about to be blown.
