Byron Scott might not be out of a job soon, but he has a few things that he has to prove to the Lakers.

With the way things have gone for the Los Angeles Lakers here in the 2015-16 NBA season, you might suspect that head coach Byron Scott will be out of a job at the earliest once the season has come to a close. However, that doesn’t seem to be entirely the case, but he does have a lot of work to do to save his position with the organization.

According to a report from the Los Angeles Times, Scott is basically on a 2.5-month trial process with the team the rest of the way. Basically, Scott has to show at least some signs that this team will improve in the future, and of course, that includes the younger players on the roster showing some significant improvement on the floor.

This is where the problem really lies.

As we all know by now, one of the big criticisms with Scott this season has been the handling of point guard D’Angelo Russell, the team’s most recent first-round draft pick. Russell has not been as overwhelming as some people thought, and that can be somewhat attributed to the fact that Scott has a penchant for sitting the young man on the bench. Russell was expected to get some nice minutes this season as he begins his journey as the leader of the Lakers’ offense, but that has not been close to the case this year, much to the dismay of a lot of people out there.

Then of course there’s Julius Randle, who has also really not seen his fair share of good minutes on the floor, thus holding back his progression in what is essentially his rookie season. Last year Randle was the No. 8 overall pick by the Lakers in the draft, but an injury in the first game of the regular season ended his first NBA campaign.

So while Scott isn’t definitively out as the Lakers coach when the season comes to a close, he needs to get a jump on showing some improvement on the court with the talent that he has.
