7. 1978 Pittsburgh Steelers (SB XIII)

In the heart of the Steel Curtain era of the Pittsburgh Steelers with “Mean Joe” Greene, L.C. Greenwood, and Dwight White fronting the defensive line, the 1978 Steelers were one of the most dominant defensive teams in the history of the NFL. In fact, it’s unquestionably their defense that makes this Pittsburgh team one of the top-10 greatest Super Bowl winning teams of all time.

It’s worth mentioning that the offense for the Steelers was far from inept as they were led by a handful of legendary players in quarterback Terry Bradshaw, fullback/running back Franco Harris, and receivers Lynn Swann and John Stallworth. However, it was the Steel Curtain and the defense that was unbelievably dominant as the best defense in the country, allowing only 12.2 points per game on the Steelers way to a 14-2 record in the regular season.

In their first two playoff games, Pittsburgh absolutely wrecked the rest of the AFC as they knocked off the Broncos and the Houston Oilers by a combined score of 77-15. It was a much tighter affair in the Super Bowl as they faced another dynasty in the Cowboys of that era, but even then the Steelers wouldn’t be denied as they ultimately captured the victory in the big game by a count of 35-31.
