All-star point guard Kyle Lowry thought he was getting traded to the Knicks back in 2013, stating ‘it was a done deal.’

In 2013, the Toronto Raptors looked like they were going to throw in the towel when they traded Rudy Gay and looked like they were going to trade Kyle Lowry to the New York Knicks. In exchange, the Raptors would’ve received Metta World Piece, Iman Shumpert, and a first-round pick. Instead, the Knicks are the team that’s rebounding. In contrast, the Raptors made the playoffs that year, they own a Knicks (or Nuggets) first-round pick, and they kept Kyle Lowry who has formed the best backcourt in the East with DeMar DeRozan.

If it were up to Lowry, though, he says the deal should have happened and that it was done until Knicks owner James Dolan rejected it. He didn’t want to deal with Masai Ujiri again after he fleeced them with Carmelo Anthony. However, they would’ve been the ones doing the fleecing here, and with the Knicks starting Jose Calderon at point guard, they really could’ve used Lowry. But when talking to USA Today, he stated “At the end of the day, the decision was made for me to be here and it worked out equally, perfectly for both parties.” It’s clear that Lowry loves playing in Toronto when he got signed to a team-friendly contract of 4 years and $48 million.

The notion that it worked out well for the Knicks is questionable, at best. Sure they drafted Three 6 Latvia, but they’re still going through a tumultuous season in which they had to fire Derek Fisher. And without a first-round pick this year, they’re not going to be able to add anything valuable at the draft. Of all the regrets James Dolan has, this one may be his biggest.
