Free Agents Leaving

After the mass exodus of players that left the 49ers’ roster last offseason, the 49ers don’t have too many free agents this offseason. That being said, there are a couple of intriguing names. Offensive guard Alex Boone is sure to generate a ton of interest in free agency and it remains to be seen if Chip Kelly will keep him around.

Wide receiver Anquan Boldin is another big free agent for the 49ers, but at 35 years old, the 49ers will probably move on and Boldin will probably look to jump on with a contending roster. If there’s one person the 49ers should aim to keep, it’s nose tackle Ian Williams.

Williams has developed into one of the better nose tackles in the league and depending upon what direction Chip Kelly takes the 49ers, they should do what they can to re-sign Williams. There’s probably a good chance that some team in free agency is going to give Williams a good chunk of money to plug up the middle of the defensive line.

They will also have to determine if they want to keep Colin Kaepernick, who is under roster, but that’s something they will spend their time thinking about later.

When a team bottoms out their roster and brings in a new coach, they’re going to have plenty of decisions to make and personnel to bring in. It’s a long road ahead of them, but the 49ers are just beginning step one.
