The Orioles reportedly signed Dexter Fowler, signaling they are serious about contending during the 2016 season

There are plenty of free agents still available as Spring Training begins for the 2016 MLB season. It appears that a name has been removed from that long list. It is being reported that the Baltimore Orioles have agreed to a three-year deal worth $35 million with outfielder Dexter Fowler.

While the club has not confirmed, it could be a huge boost for the Orioles. Even though the pickup would cost the Orioles a Draft pick, a chance to make the postseason would be worth it. Fowler had a very productive season for the Cubs, hitting a career-high 17 home runs and producing a .250 batting average, all while playing 156 games. His glove can play a big factor inside Camden Yards, just like it did in Wrigley Field. The 29-year old would be joining a talented team that already includes Chris Davis, Adam Jones and Manny Machado. ESPN’s Buster Olney put together this potential lineup for the Orioles whenever the Fowler deal becomes official:

That would be one powerful lineup. With Fowler possibly at the top of the card, the Orioles would be able to see a lot of runs scored. With the emergence or Manny Machado as a power hitter, Adam Jones continuing to produce and “Crush” Davis hitting bombs, Camden Yards could see Fowler running around the bases almost every at-bat.

The only issue with this deal would be how the Orioles would be able to manage the various outfielders they picked up. They just signed South Korean Hyun-soo Kim to a two-year deal, and picked up Mark Trumbo from the Mariners. I am sure the Orioles can work things around, which would help Fowler’s cause. It may be mid-February, but Fowler may finally have a home as a member of the O’s.
