NFL Draft Rumors: Chargers willing to trade No. 3 pick
By Josh Hill
The San Diego Chargers are open to dealing the No. 3 overall pick.
We are still a few months away from the NFL Draft, but already we’re starting to hear rumors — or possible smokescreens — when it comes to action at the top of the order.
We’ve already heard rumors about the Tennessee Titans being willing to deal the top pick in the draft, and now the San Diego Chargers are opening phone lines for a possible deal.
According to Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Chargers are open to dealing the No. 3 overall pick if they hear the right offer.
That’s the key in all of this — the Chargers finding the right deal to make. Gehlkne reports that the Chargers are merely listening to offers rather than actively shopping the pick to move down. The Chargers aren’t in need of an immediate piece to build the future around, as it could be argued that they have a few years left in the Philip Rivers championship window.
That being said, if they could add a top defensive draft pick or a weapon on offense, that could change things for them in 2016. Ditto for the rationale that trading the pick for an established player would help them in the more immediate future — as opposed to stockpiling picks for the future.
Either way, the Chargers are doing the only thing they should be doing right now — putting out feelers for one of the top three picks that could be on the move. Cleveland will more than likely hang onto their pick to draft Jared Goff, Paxton Lynch or Carson Wentz — which would make the Chargers No. 3 overall pick insanely valuable to teams looking to trade up an ensure they grab a quarterback they want before he’s gone.
