Premature celebration costs high school basketball team state title (Video)

A high school basketball team celebrated their state championship ‘win’ too early and subsequently lost at the buzzer

The Burrillville High School boys basketball team was mere seconds away from clinching the Rhode Island state championship over Chariho High School, needing just one more stop to secure the victory. Chariho was inbounding the ball for one last shot with four seconds left and Burrillville got their stop they needed as No. 2 on their team got a steal and threw the ball up in the air to commence the celebration—which was actually the worst possible idea.

The problem was that the player’s tossing of the ball sent the rock straight to a Chariho player who was able to call timeout with under a second left on the clock. Chariho was able to draw up one final attempt at a game-winning shot, this one working out successfully as they hit a lay-up to defeat Burrillville for the Rhode Island D-III state championship:

If there was ever a high school basketball version of Leon Lett, No. 2 for Burrillville is certainly that with how costly his premature celebration was to his team.

Jokes aside, this is absolutely heartbreaking for the eventual runner-ups. Not only did they lose in the high school basketball state championship game, but they did so in quite literally the worst possible way imaginable. They are all going to need to see the guidance counselor after a loss like this—you know, just to work through things.
