Joe Johnson: Fantasy Basketball Update

Joe Johnson was bought out and released from the Brooklyn Nets and immediately signed with the Miami Heat. The Heat wasted no time putting him into the starting lineup. The Heat have also said that Johnson is an integral part to what they are doing there so he should be utilized pretty well. My first thoughts have been that Johnson would take a pretty big hit in Miami, but with some of the talk coming out of there I have been pretty encouraged.

In his first game Johnson scored 12 points with three rebounds, three assists, and one three-pointer in 30 minutes of action. Goran Dragic was also quoted today as saying how excited he is to have Johnson there to help spread the floor and he should do just that. Johnson should be relied on pretty heavily since the Heat are fighting for a playoff spot and Johnson could provide some nice stats down the stretch.

Chances are that Johnson is owned in any league in which he would be a valuable fantasy asset, but I would recommend him as a pickup in twelve team leagues or larger. You may want to add him to your watch list in standard sized leagues and he could be valuable if you are in need of three-pointers. Johnson could also be valuable in the points category as well.

I would not be looking to add Johnson to my keeper or dynasty league teams unless I was trying to make a run for the title. He has skills, but they are obviously declining as he ages making him a less desirable fantasy option in dynasty leagues. He could however be a useful option for teams that are making a strong run for the title in their leagues.

Most likely his value will be unchanged, but if Wade is to miss time he could see a pretty good bump in value. We all know that from time to time Wade will shut it down for a week or so at a time. Johnson could also see a slight bump as he learns the offense and builds chemistry with Wade, Dragic, and Deng. If you have some dead weight on your fantasy team you could certainly do a lot worse than cutting them and giving Johnson a waiver claim.
