The New York Jets are looking to keep a main asset to their team, as they reportedly will put the franchise tag on Muhammad Wilkerson

The Jets look like they have made significant improvements to their team in recent years. Last season showed it, as they had a surprising 10-6 record, making things exciting all the way. There are various reasons for their little run. If there is one thing the Jets can boast about last season, it is their defense. If their offense wasn’t clicking, they could always rely on their defensive game. According to NFL.com’s stats page, the Jets ranked fourth in the minimum amount of yards allowed per game.

It appears that the Jets are looking to lock up their strong defense as soon as possible. According to various reports including NFL.com, the Jets are looking to place the franchise tag on key defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson.

Muhammad Wilkerson has been a key part of the Jets defense since he was taken as the thirtieth overall selection in the 2011 NFL Draft. The 26-year old had a career-high twelve sacks this season, and was elected to his first Pro Bowl appearance. In 15 games started, Wilkerson was the rock the Jets needed in a defense that included fellow “Sons of Anarchy” members Sheldon Richardson and Damon Harrison.

The NFL Players Association ran the numbers for what a positioned player with a franchise tag would receive. If the reports are true, Muhammad Wilkerson should be able to rest easy.

Wilkerson is a very important asset to the Jets, so the possible tag is completely necessary for the team. By 4pm today we will see if the Jets go through with it. With the team looking to keep its key players for their hopeful march to the playoffs, this might be the smartest move the Jets could make.
