Hassan Whiteside got up ridiculously high to block John Jenkins’ shot on Thursday night
The Miami Heat have a major decision to make this offseason in regards to Hassan Whiteside. The hyper-athletic center is going to be one of the most coveted free agents on the market and, if they want to do so, they’ll have a ton of competition in trying to bring him back for the future. As for now, though, the incredible shot blocking center is still suiting up for the Heat and still blocking shots in the most ridiculous ways.
On Thursday night against the Phoenix Suns, Suns guard John Jenkins drove in off the right wing and tried to throw up a little floater over Whiteside. Either he overestimated his abilities or has never seen Hassan Whiteside play defense before because the Heat big man skied ridiculously high to snatch the ball out of the air at the shot’s peak for a monstrous block:
Though the floater has traditionally been a shot for smaller guards to get off in the post over much larger big men, it’s becoming less and less effective with the super-long, super-athletic big man that are infiltrating frontcourts throughout the league. Guys like Hassan Whiteside, Anthony Davis, and Rudy Gobert eat those shots for lunch and then take the leftovers home for dinner.
Regardless of what you think about Whiteside’s true value to an NBA team, he’s undeniably gifted in multiple facets of the game. He’s going to get paid, but the question is whether or not it’ll be the Heat or another team that will pay him.
