NJPW announces return of Super J Cup in 2016

At Day 1 of the New Japan Cup 2016 tournament, NJPW announced that Super J Cup 2016 would be happening later this year

The New Japan Cup 2016 in New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) got underway with Day 1 on Thursday with some of the best talents in the promotion competing in a single-elimination format tournament for the right to challenge for either the NEVER Openweight title, the IWGP Intercontinental title, or the IWGP Heavyweight title at Invasion Attack 2016. However, before New Japan Cup 2016 got underway, NJPW made a huge announcement regarding another tournament happening later in the year.

Prior to the beginning of Day 1 of the New Japan Cup, NJPW announced in the arena that the much-acclaimed Super J Cup would be returning in 2016 after not having occurred since 2009:

Per the announcement and in the tradition of the tournament, Super J Cup 2016 will feature some of the best junior talents from around the world. The tournament will have wrestlers from ROH, Pro Wrestling NOAH, Pro Wrestling Zero1, Dragon Gate, CMLL, NJPW, and other promotions from around the world competing in the tournament originally created to showcase young talent from around the world.

The Super J Cup was first held in 1994 as the idea of the legendary Jushin Thunder Liger and has been help five times in the history of NJPW in 1994, 1995, 2000, 2004, and 2009. That it’s been seven years since fans have last seen a Super J Cup tournament is obviously significant.

Details for Super J Cup 2016 are scarce as the announcement was just made on Thursday, but tradition would say that the tournament will again be single-elimination, though we don’t know if there will be byes like in some past years or not.

Regardless of the particulars, though, the return of the Super J Cup is huge for NJPW and the pro wrestling world as a whole. Fans of wrestling should be ecstatic at this announcement and eagerly anticipating the tournament as a whole as it draws closer.
