Will Ty Lawson be signing with the Indiana Pacers?

While the Ty Lawson experiment with the Houston Rockets blew up before it even really got off the ground, according to Shams Charania of The Vertical of Yahoo! Sports, it seems that Lawson may have found his new team after being cut by the Rockets on the March 1 deadline. Lawson could reportedly join the Eastern Conference’s Indiana Pacers in a matter of days.

By the Rockets cutting Lawson on March 1, the veteran NBA point guard can play in the 2016 NBA Playoffs if he signs with a contending team once he clears waivers. Many thought the New York Knicks would make some sense given their current limitations at point guard, but the Knicks have gone in the toilet in the last few weeks (Editors note: past 15 seasons) and may appropriately address their point guard woes this summer in free agency.

Though the Pacers aren’t world-beaters in the East with a 32-29 record, good enough for seventh place in the Eastern Conference standings, Indiana could look to upgrade their play at point guard in signing Lawson to a veteran minimum contract for the rest of the 2015-16 NBA season.

Indiana should make the NBA Playoffs with the roster they have now, but if the Pacers want to think about getting out of the first round as a clear underdog, they’ll have to improve their play at point guard. Starter George Hill turns the basketball over too often for the Pacers to have a strong offensive identity in the small ball era in Indianapolis.

The Pacers are a strong defensive-minded team under head coach Frank Vogel, but may look to acquire more balance in signing Lawson for the rest of the season. He could come off the bench in a reserve role and run the second unit’s offense. If Indiana likes what they see out of him this spring, they could look to bring Lawson into the fold full-time in 2016-17.
