The WGC-Cadillac Championship did not have the easiest time trying to spell Rory McIlroy’s name.
In sports there are a lot of names that are pretty difficult to spell. However, when it comes to the more recognizable players in sports, you tend to just learn it after a while and it becomes second nature. Apparently, though, this was not the case for the WGC-Cadillac Championship folks and the way they handled the spelling of Rory McIlroy’s name.
By now, it’s more than safe to say that McIlroy is not just one of the more recognizable golfers on the planet, but one of the more recognizable athletes overall. He’s taken the golf world by storm in recent years, collecting himself a lot of trophies along the way.
Still, on Thursday we found out that his accolades were not nearly enough to get the people from the WGC-Cadillac Championship to spell his name correctly.

But they spelled D-A-Y and S-P-I-E-T-H right. #McIlroy pic.twitter.com/pOygMzQyZN

OH COME ON! REALLY?!?!
All right, to somewhat their credit, I guess when you sound it out it might seem as if you did the right thing to an extent, but that still doesn’t change the fact that it’s absolutely, positively wrong. And at a golf event, no less.
And if you’re wondering whether or not Rory noticed, he did.
I asked Rory McIlroy if he saw the misspellings today. "I did. I've been out here nine years now and they still couldn't get my name right."
