5 free agency destinations for Andre Drummond
By John Buhler
It seems that if the Atlanta Hawks end up losing All-Star center Al Horford this summer in free agency that the organization would likely gravitate towards a more traditional center to replace Horford. He’s a true power forward, having to play his entire NBA career out of position as an undersized center.
Last summer, Atlanta entertained possibly signing then free agent Greg Monroe as a potential replacement for Paul Millsap should he walk in free agency. In theory, Monroe would have played the five and Horford would go to playing his natural position at the four. Millsap re-upped with the Hawks and Monroe ultimately went to the Milwaukee Bucks.
Since Horford could leave this summer and with Millsap under contract for two more seasons with Atlanta, would the Hawks’ front office consider signing first-time All-Star center Andre Drummond in 2016 NBA Free Agency?
While Hawks head coach Mike Budenholzer tends to bring in players that can shoot the basketball well from beyond the arc at nearly all positions, he may take exception with an undeniable talent like Drummond.
Atlanta is terrible on the glass and there is nobody better in the league today than Drummond on the boards. Coach Bud would have to learn to live with a 50% free throw shooter at center with almost no range offensively, but would welcome a defensive standout that could get nightly double-doubles at the five.
While the lumbering Drummond would certainly affect the pace with which Budenholzer wants his Hawks to play at, pace doesn’t mean much come playoff time and Drummond could become a franchise cornerstone for perennial Eastern Conference standout teams in Atlanta should he sign with the Hawks as a suitable replacement for the hypothetically departed Horford.
