3. More talent will help Marcus Mariota’s development

Finding a franchise quarterback is the hardest thing in the NFL to do, and the Titans took a major step forward by selecting one with Mariota’s upside last year. It’s far to early to consider Mariota a sure thing, but Tennessee has to be thrilled with Mariota’s season overall (minus the injuries), and he showed off plenty of electrifying playmaking ability.

The next key will be to surround Mariota with the right weapons to be successful. Tennessee really struggled with that in 2015, a big reason why they went 3-13 despite a solid showing overall from their rookie quarterback.

Tennessee’s struggles in the run game are well-documented, but Mariota didn’t exactly have a lot of weapons to work with in the passing game either. While tight end Delanie Walker was terrific in 2015, he shouldn’t be counted on to provide another 1,000 yard season in 2015, and Tennessee’s top two receivers on the depth chart for 2016 are Harry Douglas and Kendall right, along with the promising but raw Dorial Green-Beckham.

Even if Murray isn’t the player he once was, adding him to the offense clearly increases the talent level on the roster. Mariota certainly can’t do everything by himself as a second-year quarterback, so getting a few playmakers around him is necessary for his development.

One underrated aspect of acquiring Murray is that he will help in pass protection by using his powerful frame. Tennessee’s biggest weakness is the offensive line, so Mariota could use all the extra protection he can get from his running backs.
