Around this time of year, Hardwood Paroxysm usually does a theme week. This year, as the pool of players who began their careers in the 1990s dwindles, we thought it would be fun to celebrate the entire decade. In typical HP fashion, we will be covering ten years of basketball like a cat chasing a laser pointer. There is nothing comprehensive about our plans, around the HP Network we’re simply digging into the players, teams, and stories from that decade which interest us most. Welcome to #90sWeek.

The 90s were a great decade for basketball. In the early part of the span stars like Michael Jordan, Reggie Miller, Hakeem Olajuwon dominated the game and captivated fans around the world. In the later part of the decade things got even more fun, as characters we would grow to love entered the league. Players like Rasheed Wallace, Kevin Garnett and Allen Iverson joined in the last five years of the 90s. In 1998 one of those characters that would change the league forever, a genius named Ricky Davis, joined the league.

While Davis was a bit slow to make a major impact, he was able to show flashes during his early career minutes with the Hornets thanks to his incredible athleticism and fearlessness which allowed him to do things like this:

First of all, yes that court is absolutely amazing. But that isn’t what we are here for. We are here to bask in the glory of Ricky Davis and that dunk is the reason why. Davis’ head is up around the rim by the time he throws it down, which is important because he jumped over a man to get to the ball. Between the timing to grab the ball right as it comes off the rim and the leaping ability it took to get to it, Davis played things perfectly, as should be expected from Ricky Davis.

We miss you, Ricky.
