5 reasons why Colin Kaepernick is bad for the Broncos
By Ian O'Brien
3. Broncos must maintain strong passing game
The Broncos adopted a pass-first offense following the departure of Tim Tebow, as they signed Peyton Manning to a hefty contract in 2012. Manning drastically transformed the Broncos offense into a record-setting unit while taking advantage of skilled wide receivers such as Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders. It would be counterproductive for the Broncos to go all-in for a quarterback who possesses limitations in the passing game, especially with the possible departure of C.J. Anderson approaching.
While Kaepernick possesses a rocket arm, this sort of asset will not be useful enough if he can’t utilize Thomas and Sanders properly.
Critics of this viewpoint may point out that quarterbacks like Prescott or Lynch may have similar limitations since they are both running quarterbacks as well. However, they both offer incredible upside while Prescott dramatically improved his accuracy during his senior season at Mississippi State, as seen by his 66.2 completion percentage.
Lynch experienced similar improvement in his final season with Memphis, as he completed 66.8 percent of his throws. Regardless of whether the Broncos will choose to move forward with a running quarterback, it would be wise for them to make sure their next signal caller can make the necessary NFL throws on a regular basis.
