NFL free agency: 10 best signings
By Rory Ostrow
1. Texans sign QB Brock Osweiler
Contract: 4 years and $72 million, $37 million guaranteed
Now some of you might be saying, “why is an unproven QB signing a huge contract at the top of this list?” In the NFL, you either have a QB you can win with, or you don’t. Prior to this signing the Texans had a solid roster with a major hole at QB. Last year, they fielded a plethora of quarterbacks, including Brian Hoyer, Ryan Mallett, T.J. Yates and even Brandon Weeden.
The reason Brock got this opportunity is because quarterback is by far the most important position in the NFL, and he gives them a better chance to win games than any of those four other guys. When you have the opportunity to get a potential franchise QB, you take it because those opportunities don’t come up often. Just ask the Browns
For Osweiler, this is a good situation to be in. The Texans are a team that is ready to compete with a good quarterback at the helm. They have a solid defense led by J.J. Watt and they have explosive playmakers like DeAndre Hopkins and newly acquired Lamar Miller. Osweiler has the frame and arm strength to be a successful NFL QB and at only 25 years old he has plenty of time to get better. If Osweiler turns into the QB the Texans want, this would be the best free agent signing the Texans have ever made.
