NFL Free Agency: Courtney Upshaw to visit with Jets
By Jason Parker
Linebacker Courtney Upshaw, who has spent his entire career with the Baltimore Ravens, is taking a visit with the New York Jets.
NFL free agency is just over a week old for the 2016 offseason and we’ve already seen plenty of movement at every position to new teams across the league. After spending his first four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, one linebacker is looking elsewhere for his next paycheck.
Courtney Upshaw, who is one of the few players to win a college national title and a Super Bowl championship in back-to-back seasons, is taking a visit with a different AFC team in hopes of finding a new landing spot:
Upshaw was a second-round draft pick by the Ravens out of Alabama, where he was a member of the 2009 and 2011 title teams for the Crimson Tide. As a rookie, Upshaw proved to be valuable at stopping the run and forced a fumble in the team’s Super Bowl XLVII win over San Francisco. In 2015, Upshaw came up with two sacks while forcing two fumbles (and recovering three overall for the year).
Upshaw would provide linebacker depth for the New York Jets at a position of need. Already, the team has seen free agent linebacker Demario Davis leave for Cleveland and still has several others on the open marker, including Erin Henderson and Jamari Lattimore. So far in free agency, the Jets have shored up other positions like running back and defensive line, but have not signed a linebacker.
