Miami head coach wants arena named after Angel Rodriguez (Video)

PROVIDENCE, RI - MARCH 19: Angel Rodriguez

Miami head coach unsurprisingly overreacts to his star player carrying the team against Wichita State.

The Miami Hurricanes are on to the Sweet Sixteen after sneaking past Wichita State in a game they were actually favored to lose. The Canes came into their Round of 32 game against the Shockers this higher seed but not the team many expected to win.

That didn’t stop guard Angel Rodriguez from going off against the Shockers, proving that he was better than the much lauded Fred Vanvleet — at least today he was. Naturally, Canes head coach Jim Larrañaga violently overreacted to this in a way that you can’t be that surprised about.

In one of the best overreationary pieces of the weekend, Larrañaga said he wanted the Dunkin’ Donuts Center renamed for Angel Rodriguez — and was only probably half joking.

Every March we get players like Rodriguez who play well for stretches and become temporary, yet disposable, household names. Remember Cleanthony Early from Wichita State a few years ago? Shane Larkin even made a name for himself at Miami briefly but neither player has done much in the NBA.

Lest we forget Kyle O’Quinn from Norfolk, who was the face of an upset over Missouri in 2012 and has disappeared despite playing for the Knicks right now. Either way, we can’t harp on A-Lob for being so fantastic against Wichita State, but let’s lay off dedicating real estate to him for at least a little while.
