Floyd Mayweather may come out of retirement yet, and it could be against Gennady Golovkin.

When Floyd Mayweather announced his retirement after beating Andre Berto, many people were quick to dismiss it. After all, why tie Rocky Marciano’s record when you could beat it? Besides, there were a ton of names that he still hadn’t faced that people believed could change the 0 in his loss column, the main one being Gennady Golovkin.

In a

recent interview

with Abel Sanchez, Golovkin’s trainer, he hinted that we may see this superfight come to fruition.

At the very least, a comeback fight against Golovkin would do well to wash the horrible taste of the Berto fight out of our mouths.

Some of the comments that Sanchez was referencing was when Floyd talked about Golovkin’s punching style. He’s got serious one-punch knockout power, but Floyd may be the most elusive boxer of all-time. And he feels confident when matching up with him stylistically, stating that he isn’t that different to Manny Pacquiao: “Triple G, not being disrespectful, but he’s straight up and down, no special effects. That’s easy work. With the [Manny] Pacquiao fight, you know, [I won] 10 rounds to two, that was a blowout.”

There’s no question that GGG and Floyd Mayweather are two very contrasting styles. Golovkin’s knockout of David Lemieux was his 21st in a row, while Mayweather hasn’t recorded a (legitimate) knockout since 2007 against Ricky Hatton. Mayweather’s elusive style seems to match up well against anyone, which is why he hasn’t recorded a professional loss. Whenever an opponent is offered that many believe can beat Mayweather, he ends up cruising to a 12-round decision.

Despite not being active in the sport anymore, Floyd Mayweather continues to dominate the boxing headlines. And even though Gennady Golovkin is one of the most feared middleweights in all of boxing, he has yet to generate a big pay-per-view. While a fight with Canelo Alvarez seems to be falling into place, a match against Floyd would boost his name significantly, especially if he beats him. A Golovkin win would be an effective passing of the torch moment, while a Mayweather win could easily solidify himself as the greatest of all time.
