Rick Fox thinks that eSports will be competing with the NHL within the next two years.

There has been a recent surge in the amount of eSports that are played online or over electronic consoles. Whether or not those can be considered a sport is up for debate. What is not up for debate is how popular they have become over the past few years. Former Los Angeles Lakers forward Rick Fox purchased Gravity Gaming (a League of Legends team) and renamed it Echo Fox. He’s one of the leading forces behind eSports’ recent popularity. In a recent interview with TMZ, he said that eSports will be on par with the NHL within the next two years.

With athletes like Rick Fox, Alex Rodriguez and Shaq investing in eSports, it could easily become one of the most popular professional sports leagues within the next few years. However, saying that it is ready to take on the NHL is a bit of a stretch. It would be a bit ironic if eSports passed the other professional sports leagues in popularity. Sort of like a real life version of Revenge of the Nerds, except that former athletes would be taking down their own kind.
