D.J. Stephens of the NBA D-League’s Iowa Energy can’t stop throwing down ridiculous fast break dunks

Guard D.J. Stephens of the NBA D-League’s Iowa Energy topped off arguably the best dunk and basketball play of the year earlier this week when he essentially flew to throw down a lob off of two beautiful passes against the Fort Wayne Mad Ants. Again playing the Mad Ants on Saturday night, Stephens picked up right where he left off in terms of hammering home highlight-reel dunks.

Midway through the first quarter, the Energy had numbers as they broke loose on a fast break with Stephens running the break. He quickly dished it out to the wing as he crossed halfcourt, but only to play a little give-and-go as his Energy teammate tossed up a high lob that Stephens again had to fly to go get before bringing it crashing down with a thunderous two-handed dunk:

If Stephens is going to keep throwing down dunks like this in D-League games, the NBA needs to make a concerted effort next season to call him up to an NBA roster around All-Star weekend so that he can compete with Zach LaVine and Aaron Gordon in the Slam Dunk Contest. Judging by his first slam and now this one, Stephens could more than hold his own in that matchup.

Who knows if that’s something that’s even remotely going to happen. What we can say for sure, though, is that D.J. Stephens’ dunks over the past week most definitely will be drawing some new eyes to the Energy and the D-League.
