Five-star Mississippi State signee Jeffery Simmons was caught on camera punching a woman laying on the ground during an incident recently.

As the disturbing trend continues involving athletes at all levels and domestic violence, one five-star SEC football signee is apologizing after his incident was caught on camera.

Jeffery Simmons, a defensive end recruit who was rated the number one player in the state of Mississippi for the 2016 class, was seen on video punching a woman who was laying on the ground while involved in a fight with another woman this past Thursday. CBS affiliate WCBI-TV released the video of the Mississippi State Bulldogs signee throwing punches and the moments afterward:

Monday, police in Macon, MS announced a misdemeanor disturbing the peace charge for Simmons:

Simmons, who surprised some experts when he picked the Bulldogs over Alabama and Ole Miss, took to Facebook and issued an apology that read in part:

"“…I take full responsibility for my actions that occurred on Thursday evening. My apology goes out to the Taylor Family and especially to Sophia Taylor. What was I thinking? Honestly, I wasn’t thinking, all I could think was this is my family and I am supposed to defend my family.—I truly hope that you will find it in your hearts to forgive me for my actions. I want to apologize to those that have supported me, those who look up to me and those who I consider family. I hope that each of you will accept my apology. I was raised in church, I’ve asked for forgiveness and I pray for God’s continued guidance as I move forward.”"

Simmons said the incident begun after the woman (reported to be Taylor) made comments to members of his family about his late nephews. Simmons would go on to say that, despite those hurtful comments, he has no excuse for his actions.
