4. The Dolphins LOVE spending money in free agency
If owner Stephen Ross and management had their way, Foster would more than likely be inked to a three year deal with about $4 million a season to get him to sign with the Dolphins. It has been no secret that since Ross took over as the principal owner of the team before the 2009 season, he opens up his wallet and sometimes overpays.
Over the last ten seasons (of which Ross has been involved as an owner for eight of them, the Dolphins have spent the most of any team when it comes to free agent contracts…and had just one winning season in the process:
So far this offseason, the Dolphins haven’t been as bad as past seasons when it comes to contracts that will bite them later on, but there is still plenty of time and, as the need continues to grow for a running back, it wouldn’t be all that shocking to see Ross go big for someone just to say the team got a “need” player that they overpaid for again.
