The Oakland Raiders have reached a two year deal that will keep Aldon Smith with the franchise through 2017.

With much of the attention turning toward the college player draft coming up at the end of the month, free agents across the NFL are still in the process of signing deals with either their 2015 club or a new destination.

In the case of the Oakland Raiders and linebacker / defensive end Aldon Smith, the sides have agreed on a deal to keep the five-year veteran in the Bay Area:

Smith reportedly only wanted to re-sign with the Raiders, who picked him up after being cut by the San Francisco 49ers in August of 2015. The Raiders won’t get the enjoy the benefits of the deal until November 17th, when Smith’s one-year suspension from the NFL is up for his latest brush with the law.

Smith spent his first four seasons with the 49ers, where he set various team records and became the fastest player in NFL history to reach 30 sacks for his career. He finished his time with San Francisco with 44 total sacks and was named a first team All-Pro in 2012, having 19.5 sacks and helping to lead the 49ers back to the Super Bowl.

Smith’s time with the 49ers was marred with various arrests for incidents including DUI, marijuana and weapons charges to go along with arrest at Los Angeles International Airport for allegedly telling passengers he had a bomb (those charges were later drop). He was arrested for hit-and-run last August, leading to his release and subsequent year long suspension from the league.
