Colin Kaepernick: 75 percent chance he stays with the 49ers
By Jacob Yturri
Colin Kaepernick and the San Fransisco 49ers have appeared to be headed towards a divorce. Now, a new report says Kaepernick is likely to stay with his team.
Per ESPN Insider Adam Schefter, the chances that Colin Kaepernick stays with the San Fransisco 49ers are “75-25” in favor of the 49ers retaining Kaepernick.
This latest report is in agreement with the recent news regarding a Kaepernick trade. The trade environment for the 49ers embattled quarterback has quickly thinned. As much as a month ago, a trade for the passer was practically a forgone conclusion. Now, it is unlikely to see Kaepernick leave the Bay Area.
When the 49ers first hired their newest coach, Chip Kelly, many believed that Kaepernick would not be a great fit in Kelly’s offense. As a result, rumors went flying about a Kaepernick trade being imminent. However, it wasn’t until the beginning of April that Kelly and the 49ers quarterback could actually speak.
Now that both the quarterback and coach of the 49ers have spoken, it seems very unlikely for the two to be separated quickly. While Kaepernick did have a rough season last year, maybe he will flourish in the mobile quarterback friendly offense of Kelly.
Unless the 49ers can find a trade partner, expect Kaepernick not be cut. This is because Kaepernick’s 2016-17 salary is fully guaranteed. By cutting the passer, the team would have to write out a 11.9 million dollar check. So now that the team has to pay Kapernick, it is better to keep him on the team than pay him to not play football for them.
Last season, Kaepernick played in eight games throwing for 1,615 yards, six touchdowns, and five interceptions. Additionally, he totaled 228 yards and one touchdown on the ground. Kaerpernick was benched for a couple of games last season, and injured for the rest.
