Jordan Spieth goes bogey-free in the first round of the Masters to go to the clubhouse with a three-stroke lead.

Jordan Spieth is looking to become the first golfer since Tiger Woods to win back-to-back Masters tournaments. He began his title defense with a great start in the first round on Thursday. After parring the first two holes, Spieth had a tap in birdie on the third hole to start out his virtually mistake-free first round.

Spieth also had birdies on holes six and eight to close out the front nine, including this beautiful chip shot to set up his third birdie of the day.

Spieth went to the clubhouse this afternoon with a three-stroke lead over Jason Day, who has since closed the gap to a two-stroke lead. His biggest threat for a bogey came on the Par 3, 16th hole, after his tee shot went into the rough. He chipped it to within about 15 feet and finished with his putter from distance.

When he needed to chip it close to save par, he answered the call. On 14, from the back of the green Spieth could have seen his first bogey with little room to work with on the green. But he dealt with it professionally.

Spieth is known for his ability to put the ball close to the pin from the fairway, but his putter gave him the ability to finish the first round with six birdies, and more importantly, no bogeys on a windy day at Augusta. He birdied 18 to give himself even more cushion going into the second round Friday.

Spieth will be challenged by fellow young golfer Jason Day, who looks good in the first round also. Tomorrow he will try to add to his lead at 12:55 p.m. ET.
