Danny Willett took advantage of Jordan Spieth’s historic collapse and won the 2016 Masters tournament.

Danny Willett entered The Masters at the Augusta National Golf Course as the 50/1 favorite to put on the green jacket. Considering Willett had zero major PGA tour victories and hadn’t even placed in the top five at any major tournament, people thought that was a bit too low for the 28 year old from England. Willett entered the final round at even. A strong day combined with a historic choke from Jordan Spieth ensured Willett of the green jacket and his first major tournament victory.

Willett started off the tournament with two strokes under par through the first day. After a rough second day that saw him end two strokes over par, Willett rebounded with an even third day. He hit par on each of the first five holes of the final day before hitting five birdies the rest of the way to finish the day at five under par.

Danny Willett got some help from a monumentally horrendous three hole stretch from Jordan Spieth that saw him go from seven strokes under par to one stroke under par. However, Willett was able to take advantage of the situation and had it not been for Willet’s impressive five birdies in 11 holes stretch, he wouldn’t have been in a position to win the Masters to begin with.

Hopefully Willett’s day will be remembered more than Spieth’s epic collapse because Willett put on a masterful performance and took advantage when opportunity knocked.
