player. 64.
Both eligible Michigan State Spartans, Denzel Valentine and Deyonta Davis, could make sense for the Pistons, as depth is a major issue in both the front and backcourt. Valentine went here last week, and does so again because of his seemingly perfect fit for what the Pistons need.

Valentine’s ability as a catch-and-shoot weapon would be massive around Reggie Jackson and Andre Drummond’s pick-and-rolls, but his main value to the Pistons would be his versatility in the backcourt. Given his size (6’6″ with a 6’10” wingspan) and playmaking ability (outstanding 45.8 percent assist rate), Valentine could potentially give minutes at point guard and small forward. His presence could compensate for the financial tightness the team could face as a result of Drummond’s likely contract extension coming this summer adding to already hefty contracts for Jackson and Tobias Harris.

Valentine is already 22, which means that his ceiling is probably pretty low. However, for a team like Detroit, who is likely looking for more of an instant-impact type, Valentine could jump in and contribute as soon as next year. It’s unlikely Valentine is ever more than a role player, but he looks like he should be an excellent one, because his feel for the game and versatile offensive skill set mean he should fit well into whatever role the Pistons ask him to fill.
