The Washington Capitals flipped the switch in Game One as they dominated the Philadelphia Flyers.

19. 0. 68. Final. 2

After a scoreless first 35 minutes, the Capitals unleashed the fury and looked like the dominant team that they were in the regular season, beating the Flyers 2-0 in a game that wasn’t as close as the score suggested. Philadelphia got outshot 31-19 and only goaltender Steve Mason kept Washington from lighting the lamp more than twice at the Verizon Center. Caps goaltender Braden Holtby earned a shutout with 19 saves.

Washington got goals from defenseman John Carlson and center Jay Beagle. Carlson’s goal came on a power play with less than four minutes left in the second period while Beagle’s came with less than four minutes left in the third period. The Flyers had center Sean Couturier leave the game due to an injury after being hit by Caps forward Alex Ovechkin. He suffered a sprained shoulder and will be out for the rest of the series.

Three Stars

  1. Marcus Johansson of the Caps had two assists on the night. He played a very strong game and had 17:31 of ice time. His two assists set the tone and his passing was outstanding tonight.
  2. Braden Holtby of the Caps only saw 19 shots but he stopped everything that he needed to stop. His positioning threw the Flyers off repeatedly and he had to make some impressive saves in the first period while the Caps had to kill multiple penalties.
  3. John Carlson of the Caps had a power play goal to go along with four shots on goal, two hits, and three blocked shots. He had 23:50 of ice time and was arguably the Caps best defenseman all night long.
