NFL Rumors: 49ers, Cowboys interested in acquiring Ryan Mathews
By Josh Hill
The Cowboys and 49ers reportedly would have interest in trading for Ryan Mathews.
We are just around the corner from the NFL Draft, and the futures of stars already in the NFL could be affected by what happens on the draft board. Ryan Mathews future with the Eagles is a prime example of that as we approach who Philly will target in the Draft.
The latest reports are that the Eagles are showing the most interest in Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott.
According to NFL Draft insider Tony Pauline, the Cowboys and Niners would both have interest in Mathews if he were to be made available following the selection of Elliott.
"If the Philadelphia Eagles select running back Ezekiel Elliott with the draft’s eighth pick, the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers are two teams interested in Ryan Mathews, the Eagles’ present starter."
The Eagles want a quarterback and are hoping one slides to them in the draft. That’s a tall order considering the Rams will be taking either Carson Wentz or Jared Goff with the top pick and Cleveland either taking the other or trading with a team that will at No. 2. Paxton Lynch is a possible option for the Eagles as is Connor Cook but there is belief that they could slide to the second day.
Taking Elliott would give the Eagles a franchise running back — something that Mathews very much isn’t. With DeMarco Murray in Tennessee, the Eagles are going to want someone other than Mathews as their go-to option in the backfield and a platoon headed by Elliott makes sense.
Of course, the idea of trading Mathews to division rivals in Dallas makes little sense but if the Eagles land Elliott then they’ll probably do anything they can to get out from under Mathews’ contract.
