Report: Von Miller won’t attend Broncos’ offseason program

Von Miller told Denver Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak that he will hold out during the Broncos’ offseason program as he wants a new contract before 2016.

The Denver Broncos’ superstar outside linebacker Von Miller may be Super Bowl 50 MVP and will earn at least $14.129 million in 2016, but that’s apparently not enough for him to consider participating in the Broncos’ offseason program that begins on Monday.

According to 9NEWS’ Mike Klis, Miller will hold out for a better offer from the Broncos. Miller does regret having to hold out and spoke about the issue with head coach Gary Kubiak, but Miller wants more than having the franchise tag slapped on him for the 2016 NFL season.

The linebacker hasn’t signed the franchise tag tender worth $14.129 million in 2016, as he believes he deserves a multi-year deal with the Broncos. Miller was the face of an all-time great 2015 Broncos defense that carried a Denver team with truly awful quarterback play to the franchise’s third Lombardi Trophy.

Miller was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft by the Broncos and has spent his entire five-year NFL career in the Mile High City. Klis writes that the Broncos have reportedly offered Miller a multi-year deal worth $18 million annually, but even that’s not enough.

Apparently Miller is using new New York Giants defensive end Olivier Vernon’s $17 million annual salary as leverage to broker a better deal that the $18 million. However, Denver is reticent to giving Miller Ndamukong Suh level money ($19+ million).

Miller is the best player on the Broncos without question entering the 2016 NFL season. He’s the type of player worth breaking the bank for on the defensive side of the ball. While he should hold out to get what is rightfully his, the longer the negotiations go on, the more adverse of an effect it could have on the 2016 Broncos NFL season.

He and the Broncos have until July 15th to reach a multi-year contract extension before Miller would have to play under the $14.129 franchise tag for the 2016 NFL season. Both sides clearly have some work to do.
