Leicester City keeper’s dad rips match ref during West Ham draw

Many people took issues with the ref in the Leicester City-West Ham game, although Kasper Schmeichel’s dad may have been the angriest one.

In a match that had lots of title implications on the line, the refereeing came into play big time. A challenge on Jamie Vardy, who scored the game’s only goal up until that point, was enough to send him off and suspend him for Leicester City’s next match against Swansea. Jamie Vardy is Leicester City’s leading scorer, and a contender for Player of the Year, so his loss will be a massive blow.

To make matters worse, Andy Carroll got called for a penalty on contact that was questionable at best before denying Leicester on what looked like a clear penalty the other way. In the dying minutes, Leicester finally did receive a penalty to rescue a point, but the team will view this as two points dropped rather than one point gained. Loud boos directed towards the ref were heard around the stadium and former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel was fired up about it on Twitter:

Of course, given that Peter Schmeichel is the father of Leicester’s current goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, he can be accused of being biased all day long. But anyone could see that the calls were inconsistent throughout the game, and ended up costing Leicester a win. Their last-minute penalty was a make up call more than anything.

If Tottenham beat Stoke, then Leicester drop more points against Swansea, which is conceivable since they won’t have Jamie Vardy for that one, then the title race will be blown wide open. Perhaps this ref just wanted to make the Premier League even more dramatic, though it may come at the cost of him never working another game again.
