Report: Rashan Gary received racist voicemail before visiting Clemson

Highly touted defensive prospect Rashan Gary received a racist voicemail before visiting Clemson which may have swayed him towards choosing Michigan.

While Michigan had an amazing recruiting class this year, arguably no commit was bigger than Rashan Gary. He was 247Sports’ top-ranked prospect, and took home defensive MVP honors during the All-American Game as his team pitched a shutout. Before he landed with the Wolverines, he had a good chance to land with defending runner-ups the Clemson Tigers, but according to NorthJersey.com, he received a racist voicemail from a fan going by the name of “Clemson Dan”.

This is what he said, although I should note that the following is not safe for work. You have been warned:

"Yes, this here is ‘Clemson Dan,’ and this message is for Mr. Rashan Gary. We just wantin’ to know if you’re coming down here for a visit, you better be serious about it, ’cause there’s only two things we love and that’s Clemson football and the KKK.So you better not be fooling around, if you’re gonna get a visit, you better be committin’. So, just be aware, this ain’t no fooling thing. We Clemson. We big-time football down here. We don’t take no losers, no stragglers, no lazies, no dumb people…so if you’re coming down here, you gotta do just like the KKK and be serious about your football. So if you’re coming down here, you better be serious. All right Rashan Gary, you better be the real deal. Over and out, this is ‘Clemson Dan’ saying goodbye."

Once Gary’s mom found out about it, she played it to the Clemson staff who were just as shocked. Obviously, this person shouldn’t come to represent the Clemson Tigers or their fanbase, but it’s unbelievable how people still get subjected to this kind of stuff.

And while the voicemail, and not a Jim Harbaugh sleepover, likely helped sway him towards the Wolverines, Gary’s mom won’t admit that was the case:

"It didn’t turn Rashan off of Clemson. Remember, Rashan is a kid, and he thinks he’s invincible and nothing affects him. He loved Clemson and so did I. I just think that he felt overall – not just as a football player – [Michigan] would be the place where he’d benefit the most from going to school."

Of course, it’s hard to turn down the opportunity to play for Jim Harbaugh and be part of something special at Michigan. Ever since the 49ers coach arrived, he’s taken the college football world by storm, to the point where he started a feud with SEC coaches and the NCAA had to ban satellite camps.

Maybe when Clemson Dan sees Rashan Gary be a force on the field and propel the Wolverines to success, he’ll regret his decision to try and intimidate him into signing with Clemson.
