The Carolina Panthers made a shocking decision on Wednesday when the team decided to rescind their franchise tag from cornerback Josh Norman, which made him an unrestricted free agent immediately. Norman was one of the best defensive backs in the NFL in 2015 and was a huge part of the Panthers making Super Bowl 50.

The two sides couldn’t come together on an agreement and rather than continuing to hash things out, the Panthers decided that they were done playing around and decided to move on. The decision to rescind the franchise tag comes at such a weird time because a marquee free agent is now hitting the market and just about every team has spent all their money in free agency and don’t have much cap room.

There still are teams out there that have the money to pay Norman what he wants, but it’s also a matter of the correct fit. With the NFL Draft just a week away, teams have really begun to lock in on the players that they like at certain positions, which makes this an even more strange time for one of the best players to become available.
