San Diego Padres-Fernando Rodney to Texas Rangers for Yeyson Yrizarri

I’ve traded all the Padres starters here so it’s time to trade their closer Fernando Rodney. The Padres can afford to deal Rodney. They can give Brandon Maurer or Kevin Quackenbush an opportunity to close games. What teams who are rebuilding should do is flip their closer into assets for further on down the road. This is exactly what the Padres should do with Rodney

No one knows the Rangers system like Padres GM A.J. Preller who was the Rangers assistant GM until getting the Padres job before 2015. The Padres can add a young infielder into their system, something the Padres don’t have a ton of prospects in. Yrizzarri hit over .270 in AAA as a replacement at just 18 years of age. Impressive and could be a sign of things to come.

The Rangers could use some additional depth in the bullpen with injuries to Tanner Scheppers and Keone Kela. Rodney can close or setup to give the Rangers some more late inning options down the stretch. Rodney is only making $2 million this year plus an option for 2017. It gives Texas extra prospects to trade for something else they may need as well.
