Luke Walton was congratulated on Lakers hire by father Bill Walton on Twitter by sharing a baby picture

Luke Walton was hired by the Los Angeles Lakers late on Friday night to be their new head coach. It was a move that Lakers fans had been pining for since early in the regular season and a dream that came to fruition quite quickly after Byron Scott was fired.

The new Lakers head coach is of course a former Lakers forward and the son of one of the most enigmatic and talented big men in the history of basketball, Bill Walton. Bill Walton also happens to be one of the most delightfully weird individuals on the planet. Between his Deadhead tendencies and his anecdotes that meander for day around unrelated subjects, Bill Walton is just the best.

So when Luke Walton’s father took to Twitter to congratulate his son on his first ever head coaching hire in the NBA, everyone perked up. Bill congratulated him in perfect Bill Walton fashion, waxing poetic about “little Luke Walton” growing up to be where he is now:

If you’ve ever had the pleasure of hearing Bill Walton tell a story, just know that this is almost definitely 10 percent of a sprawling story that talks about the dreams of a young boy and putting that energy into the universe to make it a reality. You can’t convince me otherwise.

Jokes aside, this is a touching moment to see a father be so proud of his son for growing up to do great things, especially so young as Luke Walton is just 36 years old. Now let’s just hope that Bill gives us running Lakers commentary going forward.
