Tyson Fury announced on Twitter that his second fight with Wladimir Klitschko will be his last, no matter the outcome.

Tyson Fury shocked the world when he ended Wladimir Klitschko’s nearly decade-long unbeaten run to capture the heavyweight championship. Their rematch in July will be one of the most anticipated fights of the year, as Fury will look to prove that his first win wasn’t a fluke.

Klitschko looked a shell of himself in his last fight, and many believed that, at 40, age finally caught up to him. Retirement would be an understandable path for Wladimir, but it’s actually Tyson Fury who announced that he will walk away from the sport after this rematch.

Fury is only 27 and has a lot ahead of him in the sport. If he beats Klitschko again, the sky’s the limit for him as he could pursue superfights with Deontay Wilder and Anthony Joshua to become the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. He hasn’t been shy with starting a feud with the latter on Twitter.

However, he feels that winning this fight would reaffirm his legacy and he wants to leave with all of his fundamentals intact. Spending time with his kids is the biggest reason he wants to walk away from the sport.

Fans should’ve seen this coming ever since the press conference for this fight, when Fury went on a long rant saying “I hate boxing, but I am too f***** good at it to stop” (h/t The Telegraph). While many were looking forward to a potential all-British clash against Anthony Joshua down the road, it appears that that is off the table. It’s hard to imagine that he isn’t serious about this.

Tyson Fury has been compared to Conor McGregor in many respects, and this latest retirement announcement is just another parallel for people to draw.
