Full highlights and results from The Miz vs Cesaro for the Intercontinental Championship at WWE Payback 2016

After The Miz used a little help from Maryse the night after WrestleMania 32 to win the Intercontinental Championship, he picked the fight with the wrong European sensation in Cesaro. That has led to this match between Cesaro and The Miz for the title at WWE Payback 2016.

As you’d expect, The Swiss Superman Cesaro was able to overpower the champ right out of the gate. When Miz tried to get some offense in with wrist lock, though, Cesaro showed off just a bit of his agility by working out of it and working it into a pin:

That’s when having Maryse out at ringside started to pay dividends for The Miz. Cesaro seemed to be looking for a Superplex or something else off the top rope when Maryse held her husband’s foot to keep him down. That allowed the champ to then go after Cesaro’s shoulder.

Miz worked the Swiss Superman’s arm a great deal after that and really put in a good amount of time trying to weaken the challenger. He didn’t weaken him enough, though, as the challenger fought out and hit a huge vertical suplex:

Cesaro then landed a ton of huge offense, withstanding any attempts at a comeback that The Miz tried to get going.

During the middle of this match with Kevin Owens on commentary, though, Sami Zayn came back out and jumped over the announce desk to attack KO:

The two brawled on the outside while Cesaro remained in control in the ring. When Cesaro locked in the crossface, though, Sami and Kevin’s brawl took them to the apron and distracted the ref. So while The Miz was tapping out, the official didn’t see it. That led to Cesaro getting Zayn and Owens off the apron, thus allowing Miz the chance to roll up the challenger by the tights and get the win.

After the match, the brawl between everyone continued, but Owens stood tall over everyone in the end, holding The Miz’s belt.
