DraftKings MLB Picks For May 3

There are 14 games in the night tournament tonight, so that means a lot of stats to go through, and a lot of tough decisions to make. Who should you spend on? Let’s hit the stats!

More from DraftKings

NOTE: these picks are based solely on statistics. Some players have never faced their opponents, or have very little experience against them. I am not saying that none of those are good picks. The highest scorer of the day could be someone with no experience against his opponent. This is based on statistical analysis only. If you have a gut feeling, then by all means, follow that. This is not an exact science. The best lineups usually have a mix of proven stats and hot players.

Aaron Nola has little history against the Cardinals, so none of them will be on here. However, if Ruben Tejada plays, he is 1-2 with a two run homer off of Nola! Matt Moore has a limited history against the Dodgers as well. It is no surprise that another interleague matchup features the same problem with Tanner Roark against the Royals. Nick Tropeano has also never faced the Brewers. The only Diamondback that Justin Nicolino has faced is Jean Segura, who is a homer shy of the cycle off of him in seven at bats. Alex Meyer has only faced Carlos Gomez in his career, who got an RBI single in his only at bat off of him. Jon Moscot has never faced the Giants. Same for the Brewers’ Junior Guerra against the Angels.

Best Bets:

Sonny Gray ($9,300): The Mariners are hitting just .197 off of Gray in 147 at bats with three homers, nine RBI, and 38 strikeouts. Gray is the top option because he is $1,000 cheaper than Harvey, and he has pitched better than him overall this year.

Matt Harvey ($10,300): Harvey has yet to have a really dominant start this year, but it may come tonight. The Braves are hitting .227 off of him in 44 at bats, but they have just two RBI and 11 strikeouts. The potential is here for him to hit the high 30’s in points. Look what Bartolo Colon did to the Braves last night (31.8 DraftKing points).

Honorable Mention:

Jake Arrieta ($12,100): The question of the day is: Is Arrieta worth the money? Well, yes and no. Yes because he is easily the best pitcher going today, even though he doesn’t have the best matchup. No because I don’t see him outscoring Harvey by enough to warrant paying the $1,800 premium. The Pirates have hit .243 in 115 at bats against Arrieta with a homer an seven driven in while striking out 26 times. Those are good numbers, but not great. That’s where the no comes in. Harvey against Atlanta looks more tantalizing.

Jose Quintana ($8,100): Quintana has actually handled the other Sox pretty well so far in his career. The Boston ones are only hitting .215 off of him in 79 at bats with no homers and seven RBI. They have only struck out 15 times though, and it is the Red Sox. They are a dangerous offensive team, which makes Quintana a bit of a risk.

Dark Horses:

Steven Wright ($7,100): Wright faced the White Sox once last year, and struck out ten while giving up two runs. He is a solid bet to pitch well again, especially considering how well he has pitched this year. His 2-2 record is misleading. He has a 1.37 ERA and 1.14 WHIP.

Matt Wisler ($6,600): Wisler doesn’t have a long history against anyone, but he has faced the Mets more than anyone so far in his career. The Mets are only hitting .211 off of him in 57 at bats with only one homer and two driven in. He has also struck out 11. His chances of winner are very slim, but he could give you great value for this price tag.

You have heard our FanDuel experts Matt Rogers and Brian Tulloch talk about “stacking” pieces of a lineup against certain pitchers. Here are the stacks that could work well on DraftKings today, based on past statistics.

Collin McHugh has a 6.65 ERA so far this year, and the Twins have a couple of players that have done well against him so far. Oswaldo Arcia ($3,300) is only one for four, but the hit is a home run. Eduardo Nunez ($3,100) is one for two with a solo home run. Kurt Suzuki ($2,300) is 2-6 with a solo homer off of McHugh, and provides a nice chance to save some money. Joe Mauer ($3,500) is 3-6, but has not driven in a run yet.

You need to stack against Chris Young. Bryce Harper ($5,100 is 4-8 with a walk, a homer, and three RBI off Young. Wilson Ramos ($3,200) has only faced Young twice, but he has homered both times.

Has there not been a stack worthy of using against Chris Tillman? Tillman has pitched well (2-1, 3.24 ERA) so far this year, but the past stats support using some Yankees. Didi Gregorius ($3,100) is 4-7 with two walks, two doubles, a triple, and a RBI against Tillman. Mark Teixeira ($4,300) is 9-23(.391) with three walks, two doubles, and three RBI against Tillman. Love him or hate him, just use him. Alex Rodriguez ($4,000) has feasted off of Tillman in his career. ARod is 6-13(.462) with three walks, four homers, and nine RBI against him.

Both Manny Machado ($4,800) and Nolan Reimold ($3,000) took Severino deep in his start against the Orioles last year. Severino is struggling so far this year, so stacking Orioles may not be a bad idea even if there are no additional stats to support it.

Andrew Cashner has done a great job of limiting damage against the Rockies, but Nolan Arenado, Charlie Blackmon, Nick Hundley, DJ LeMahieu, and Gerardo Parra all are hitting better than .300 off of him. Perhaps the most incredible thing is that the Rockies have not hit a home run off of Cashner in 84 career at bats!

Try this short stack against Martin Perez. Josh Donaldson ($5,200) is 5-13(.385) with three walks, three doubles, a homer, and two RBI off of Perez. Troy Tulowitzki ($4,100) is 1-3 with three walks and a two run homer against Perez.

Matt Joyce ($2,600) loves Jake Arrieta. He probably sends him Christmas cards even. Joyce is 7-14 with two walks, two doubles, a homer, and four RBI off of the Cubs’ ace. Oh, and he has yet to strike out against him as well. Joyce looks like a sneaky good play tonight. Andrew McCutchen ($3,600) is a lot cheaper than normal and is hitting .348(8-23) against Arrieta, but he only has one RBI and seven strikeouts. Joyce is the safer play.

Evan Longoria ($4,200) is only 4-13(.308) off of Scott Kazmir, but he has a pair of walks, a home run, and four RBI. His price is a little higher today, but the stats support the adjustment.

If Jason Heyward ($3,900) is able to play tonight, use him, even against lefty Jonathon Niese. Heyward is 9-28(.321) with two walks, two doubles, two homers, and eight RBI in his career off Niese.

Jose Abreu ($4,100) is 1-3 with a two run homer against Steven Wright. He may be worth using.

You may want to take a look at Mitch Moreland ($3,400) tonight. He is 3-5 with a homer and two RBI in his career off of Marco Estrada. No other Ranger has hit Estrada well though.

Giancarlo Stanton ($5,300) has only faced Patrick Corbin six times, but he has a homer and two RBI off of him.

Billy Hamilton ($3,500) hasn’t been a thorn in the side of many pitchers, but Jeff Samardzija is one of them. Hamilton is 5-10 with a walk, two doubles, a homer, and two RBI against him.
