The Los Angeles Dodgers have suspended minor league shortstop Erisbel Arruebarrena for the remainder of the season for unspecified reasons.

Minor league shortstop Erisbel Arruebarrena has been suspended for the remainder of the season by the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to Doug Padilla of ESPN.

The team announced the suspension on Wednesday without giving any specific reasoning. Director of player development Gabe Kapler indicated that Arruebarrena has reportedly failed to live up to the terms of his contract.

That marks the second consecutive year that Arruebarrena has been suspended for the season for unspecified reasons in May, although that was reduced to 30 games on appeal. This suspension comes without pay, which represents a significant chunk of money for Arruebarrena, who was set to make $4 million in 2016.

Arruebarrena signed a $25 million contract out of Cuba in 2014 and was regarded as a fringe prospect who might be able to contribute due to his excellent fielding skills. The Dodgers promoted Arruebarrena three different times during that 2014 season after played well in the minors, and he hit .195/.244/.220 in those stints per FanGraphs.com. Since then, Arruebarrena has not appeared above Double-A while struggling at the plate.

The Dodgers are set at shortstop for a long time with Corey Seager around, so this won’t impact their major league team at all. At best, Arruebarrena would have been trade bait if he was able to figure it out offensively, but this suspension effectively ends any chance he had of making it to the Majors again.
