NHL Rumors: Senators set to hire Bruce Boudreau?

The Senators will reportedly be interviewing Bruce Boudreau for their head coach vacancy on Friday.

When the Ottawa Senators fired former head coach Dave Cameron after an unsuccessful 2015-2016 season, owner Eugene Melnyk promised to find a new head coach quickly. It seems that he has quickly narrowed his extensive list down to a few candidates. One of those candidates is former Anaheim Ducks head coach Bruce Boudreau, who was fired on April 29.

The Senators have been linked to multiple head coaching candidates, including Randy Carlyle, Mike Yeo, and Guy Boucher. It seems like they are set on Boudreau, though. Boudreau is the most qualified of the candidates that Ottawa has been tied to. While Carlyle won a Stanley Cup in 2007 (ironically with the Ducks), that was nearly a decade ago, and his tenure with the Toronto Maple Leafs did not go well.

Boudreau would be an excellent hire by the Senators. While his teams have never done well in game seven, that is more on his players than on Boudreau. The Senators would not be interviewing Boudreau if they weren’t extremely serious about their interest in him. It’s worth noting that Boudreau has led his team to the playoffs in each full season as a head coach. Ottawa needs to hire a head coach who is proven and who can help the Senators get closer to winning a Stanley Cup while Erik Karlsson is still in his prime. Boudreau would provide them with what they need.
